Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer Made Easier with an EHR

Learn how Quality Insights helped Dr. Domingo G. Aviado develop a reporting module in his EHR to serve as a tool to monitor and ultimately increase the number of his patients who received colorectal cancer screenings.
Dr. Domingo G. Aviado is a solo-practitioner in Milford, Delaware. Based on the size of the practice and the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in the country, Dr. Aviado expects to see at least two cases of CRC in his practice per year. Based on this alarming statistic, Dr. Aviado enlisted Quality Insights’ help in developing a reporting module in his EHR to serve as a tool to monitor and ultimately increase the number of patients who received CRC screenings.
After identifying the patients who were age 50 and older and who needed a CRC screening, practice staff sent a mailing to those patients. This resulted in updating the EHR to reflect those who had a CRC screening done and scheduling a screening for those who were in need and agreed to get the screening.
One patient who elected to have the CRC screening performed was found to have early stages of CRC. The patient received treatment and was expected to make a full recovery. Thanks to early detection brought about by the diligence of Dr. Aviado’s staff and the reporting module set up in the EHR by Quality Insights, this patient’s life was saved.
