New Medicare Cards Will Replace Social Security Numbers with Medicare Number

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will remove Social Security Numbers (SSNs) from all Medicare cards by April 2019. A new, unique Medicare Number is replacing the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) on each new Medicare card.
CMS began mailing new Medicare cards to all people with Medicare in April of 2018. The mailings will follow a schedule based on geographic location and other factors.

The new Medicare numbers won’t change Medicare benefits. People with Medicare may start using their new Medicare cards as soon as they get them.
